Nairobi, Kenya |
After leaving Addis and travelling for 2 days, we arrived
at the borderpost of Ethiopia - about 10min. before closing
time, phew!
Luckily the border at Kenya were still open, so we could
check in. And there were a campsite (Moyale) we were not
allowed to travel at night to the next town.
Early the next morning we left in convoy, the only way to
travel into north Kenya. Three trucks, loaded with camels
and lots of people hanging on for dear life, travelled with
us. (for about 15 minutes) Boy, these people can race on
the terrible roads. After a while they have left us behind,
with no soldiers+guns, to look after ourselves. Luckily we
are good at that. The (only) road is an overlander`s
nightmare. It did`nt rain a lot, but the overall condition
of the gravel was aging Wijnand 1year a minute. It also
killed the last of the good tyres we had.
And this lasted 2 days, sunrise till well after sunset.
But, we have reached Isiolo in one piece

Lilongwe, Malawi |
We have arrived in Malawi after travelling through Tanzania.
In Tanzania there is evidence of great economic improvement
and Dar es Salaam is a bustling city filled with yuppies.
The town of Arusha is still the starting point for most of
the safaris and thus filled with Europeans. (You can even
have a decent cappuccino there)
First we bought (again) new tyres in Dar. and after having
spend 4 relaxing days on the white beaches of Tanzania we
left for Malawi. The tyres are still in one piece, but our
windscreen not. We saw a lot of monkeys on the road - and
the dog as well. In an attempt to have a better look at
these (for her) wild beasts, she nearly went through the
windscreen. Luckily she has not hurt herself, but we are
now driving with a crack-as-big-as-a-canyon. Hopefully
we`ll reach South-Africa without having glass strewn all
over us. Only there can we order new glass.
